Obituary

Joseph Nicholas JaQuan Newell was born on January 17, 2001 to Rachel Newell and Joseph Page at the River Region Hospital in Vicksburg, Mississippi.

Joseph faithfully attended the Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Cary, Mississippi, where, in July 2018, he confessed a belief in Christ and the desire to be baptized. There he served as a faithful member of the choir.

Joseph was not ashamed of the God he served, and openly praised Him.

Joseph received his early education at the South Delta School District. Not only did he excel academically, but was also an outstanding athlete. He was a member of the South Delta High School Bulldogs football team where he donned the #70. Joseph concluded his high school career being the valedictorian of the South Delta High School Class of 2019.

Upon graduating from high school, Joseph went on to attend Mississippi State University where he continued to excel, becoming a member of MSU's Sigma Tau Delta and Phi Beta Kappa Chapters. While there, he was also awarded scholarships every semester, and was awarded $5,000 upon receiving both his Bachelor's and Master's degrees. For a period of six (6) years, he was awarded over $35,000 in scholarships and support from the Rucker Foundation, at which he went on to become the Director of All College Affairs.

Joseph was very successful at Mississippi State University, and because of his success, he earned a professorship at Vanderbilt University where he would also be pursuing his PhD.

Before he was able to begin his new journey, on June 13, 2025, God saw fit to call Joseph home. He was preceded in death by his mother, Rachel Newell, but leaves many loved ones here to cherish the memories he leaves etched in the hearts and minds of his brother, R 'Monte Page and maternal grandmother Pauline Newell of Vicksburg, MS, who were with him when God called him home; his father Joseph Page and paternal grand-mother, Yasmine Page both of Vicksburg. MS; his grandfather, Isaac Flowers of Leland, MS; aunts, Terricina Edison of Jackson, MS, Linda (Percy) Johnson of Greenville, MS, Monica Newell of Omaha, NB, and Rochelle (David) Dotson of Edwards, MS; uncles Terrance Edison, Isaac Newell, and Johnathan (Toni) Newell of Vicksburg, MS, Kenneth (Shavon) Newell of Rolling Fork, MS, Johnnie (Sherry) Newell of Omaha, NB, and Edward Newell of Virginia; mentor and father figure Roy Rucker, the MS State University English Department, his Mt. Zion Baptist Church Family, and a host of other relatives and friends.
