Rolling Fork
On November 12, 1959, Verlyn (Payne) Powell dearly known as Vern, was born to Wyvonia Payne Logan and the late Joseph McKinney in Jackson, MS. While her departure was unexpected, she departed this life in the comfort of her home on March 20, 2024.
Vern was raised in Jackson, MS and graduated from Callaway High School. Vern married her childhood sweetheart, Norris Powell and raised 4 children ~Latrina, Tracy, Norris II, and Martin. In her young adult life, Vern traveled across the country as she mastered her role as a military wife and mother. She pursued education in multiple studies, as well as, provided volunteer services in the Navy Relief Association.
Vern settled in Dallas, Texas in the early 90's, but returned to her home state of Mississippi ~ taking root in Rolling Fork. Affectionately known to many as "Ms. Powell from the library," she served as a dedicated Librarian in Rolling Fork for many years before a career change to Geriatric Care in her final working years.
She was preceded in death by her father, Joseph McKinney, Sr.; three brothers Iury Dixon, Marvin Dixon, and Eric McKinney; and her grandmother Earlie Mae Payne.
Vern leaves to cherish her memories her children, Latrina (Jamal) Mitchell, Tracy (Reginal) Allison, Norris (Lakita) Powell, Il, and Martin (Jerrionna) Powell; ex~husband Norris Powell; her beautiful grandchildren Aubrey, Anthony Deshawn, Justice (Xavier) Washpun, Avery, Olivia, Abijah, Malaiah, Dearie, Ashton Marcel, Amire, Skylar, Kensley, and Aiden; great-granddaughter Camryn; Jeffery Ross whom she loved for many years; her loving mother and stepfather, Wyvonia and Robert Logan; three brothers, Joseph McKinney, Charles and Kenny Logan; six sisters, Wanda Mabry, Belinda (LC) Bell, Sandra Fuqua, Teresa Robinson, Pam Brown, and Lisa Stewart; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, precious nephews, nieces, and friends.
